Autopsy No.: ME 03-386; other prisoners brought detainee forward to the prison gate complaining of chest pain. He reportedly participated in a fast that day. Detainee had a history of diabetes. A physician arrived 30 minutes after patient was brought to gate. By this time pupils were fixed and dilated and the decedent remained pulseless throughout resuscitation attempts. Cause of Death: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease complicated by diabetes. Manner of Death: Natural.

    • Detainee Abed Mohammed Najem was brought to the prison gate at Abu Ghraib Prison complaining of chest pain. He reportedly had participated in a hunger strike that day and had a history of diabetes. Medics responded within five minutes and began CPR. A physician arrived within 30 minutes. Mr. Najem remained pulseless throughout resuscitation attempts. Cause of death was declared to be atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (heart attack) brought about by diabetes. The manner of death was deemed to be natural. There was no evidence of trauma.
