INCIDENTS OF ABUSE MENTIONED:
  • 2004-04-14, Baghdad, Iraq
    • Detainee victim gave verbal statement alleging that on the afternoon of April 14, 2004, two U.S. soldiers and an interpreter came to his home in the Abu Ghraib neighborhood and asked for permission to search for weapons. Report indicates that unit was acting on information provided by an Iraqi informant about "bad people" in the area. The victim asserted that he invited the officials in and they proceeded to the rear of the home, which they began to search. After a couple of minutes, a third U.S. soldier entered the home and immediately struck the victim in the mouth with his rifle butt. According to the detainee's Medical Screening Record, the victim's lower lip was lacerated and a tooth broken. The detainee's file included a statement that he had resisted arrest. A large number of U.S. soldiers provided statements for this CID investigation and indicated that the alleged incidents were inconsistent with standard operating procedure for residence searches: individuals in a searched home were never left alone, and interpreters never entered a home until contraband had been found. Investigation concludes there is "insufficient evidence to prove or disprove allegations."
